What is TMJ?
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, the pair of joints that connect your lower jaw to your skull, one on each side of your face just in front of your ears. These joints work together with surrounding muscles, ligaments, and bones to allow the complex movements your jaw makes every time you speak, chew, yawn, or swallow.
When something disrupts the normal function of these joints, whether due to injury, misalignment, muscle tension, teeth grinding, or other factors, it can lead to a range of painful and disruptive symptoms collectively referred to as TMJ disorder or TMD (temporomandibular disorder).
TMJ disorders are more common than many people realize, affecting millions of Americans — and they are significantly more prevalent in women than in men. The good news is that with the right diagnosis and care, the vast majority of TMJ disorders respond very well to treatment.
